Day Obama Campaign Train Landed In Abuja
Located strategically in-between the Transcorp Hilton Hotel and the Federal Secretariat complex, along Shehu Shagari Way, the Unity Park, completed by IRS Airlines, remained for a couple of years, one of the most beautiful sights to behold in Abuja.
Besides the well-maintained lawns that remained ever green all-year round, what, perhaps, gave the park its name and pride was the assemblage of beautifully built decks around a big water fountain, in a pyramidal form, representing all the 36 states of the federation.
Zim rivals set to begin negotiations
Negotiators from Zimbabwe's opposition and ruling party were expected to head to South Africa on Tuesday for the first round of talks aimed at ending the country's months-long political crisis.
A day after veteran President Robert Mugabe and long-time rival Morgan Tsvangirai signed a deal agreeing on the framework of the talks, their representatives were due to gather at an undisclosed venue under mediation overseen by South African President Thabo Mbeki.
Optimism over Mali-Tuareg talks
Bamako - Officials attending talks between Mali's government and Tuareg rebels said on Sunday Algeria's mediator might soon be able to announce progress, despite the recent abduction of three Malian gendarmes.
Two participants in the talks in the Algerian capital Algiers told AFP that Algeria's ambassador to Mali, Abdelkrim Gehraieb, might be able to present the first results in a few days
Africa seen as ‘next telecoms utopia’
TELECOMS analysts cannot agree whether MTN or Reliance were going to gain the upper hand if the two mobile operators had pulled off a merger, but they do agree that more foreign operators are eyeing Africa as a hot territory to muscle in on.
“Operators and investors believe Africa is the next utopia to make money from. There are new entrants coming in, people with money,” said Colin Orviss, vice-chairman of TM Forum, at a TM Forum conference in SA last week.
Mandela celebrates 90th birthday

Nelson Mandela, who was instrumental in ending apartheid in South Africa and rose from prisoner to president, is celebrating his 90th birthday.
After a series of public appearances around the world over the past few weeks, he is expected to spend the day at home with his family.
Nelson Mandela: The nature of greatness

Nelson Mandela is not a saint, despite the efforts of his assorted minders, gatekeepers and hangerson to regulate public access to him and polish his marble.
His autobiography, Long Walk to Freedom, makes it clear that he can be unreasonably stubborn (a quality he traces to his father) and imperious and that he is capable of towering rages when he believes his dignity and authority have been crossed.
Happy birthday, Madiba!
Good wishes for Nelson Mandela on his 90th birthday have been pouring in from across the country - and the world.
The Springboks, in Australia for their Tri-Nations Test on Saturday, had cake and wished Mandela all the best for the year ahead.
SAfrican stadium axed from Confederations Cup line-up
Organisers of the 2010 football World Cup in South Africa axed Port Elizabeth Tuesday from the list of venues which will stage next year's Confederations Cup after delays to stadium construction.
The decision was made after a report compiled by a technical team which said the stadium, one of 10 which are due to stage matches in the 2010 tournament, would likely miss a deadline in March next year for health and safety tests.
No SA 2010 Plan B unless 'natural disaster'
South Africa is on track and there will be no Plan B to host the 2010 World Cup in another country unless South Africa is hit by a major natural disaster.
That was stressed by Fifa secretary general Jerome Valcke after the 2010 Local Organising Committee's Board meeting held in Johannesburg on Tuesday.
Tsvangirai snubs Mbeki
Harare - President Thabo Mbeki, the chief mediator on the crisis in Zimbabwe, held his first talks with President Robert Mugabe on Saturday since his counterpart's re-election but was snubbed by the main opposition leader.
Mbeki hoped for swift progress on a negotiated settlement but his optimism was undermined by the failure of Morgan Tsvangirai, leader of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change, to attend the talks.
